Finding the theme

02_DESIGN

From the first time I read Zobelia’s story pages for the new story, One-der, I loved the words “black and white” and “cartoon character” the most.   These words just fit the story in every possible way.  I kept imagining a comic book of this very serious and bossy dog in an animated and colorful setting.

Having a theme to your design, having a couple of words picked out and put at the top of the list, is like the thread that will sew the whole story together. You can’t see the stitching of your shirt, but without it, your sleeves would fall off and nothing would hold together. The design theme is the same way, it stitches the story together.

The theme becomes your North Star to your destination and every design decision that you make along the way will need to support your chosen theme…
