Big beautiful hair
Characters often wonder what their hair is going to look like. In the previous drawing tip, I talked about how to avoid haystack hair. If you have not yet seen this tip, it is a good place to start haystack-hair.
I have a character, above, and I can imagine in my mind what I want her hair to be like: long and lots of volume!
This is how I get there in a few easy steps.
I start by drawing big shapes of hair around her head. I let my lines be wavy because wavy lines make it feel like the hair has volume.
Next, I am going to erase the lines of her head and shoulder that are now nicely covered by her hair, and add a few smaller sections of hair. These are just little, slightly wavy V shapes. I added one falling down her forehead and one by the hair-ends on the right. These little additions make her hair look more real. Understandably, she is starting to look a little happier now!
Next, I added some lines to the interior, to make it feel like the hair has texture. Hair is made of so many fine individual pieces but by drawing a few lines you can give some texture without creating a shaggy haystack. I also added another lock of hair falling down the left side of her face.
I am ready to color. You can color hair any color you like, even blue! It just depends on the character. I chose orange because I have always wished for hair this color.
